Simo Häyhä was a native of Rautjärvi, a small town on the Karelian Isthmus near the border with the Soviet Union (1920-1940). In 1925 he joined the army and, because he was an avid hunter and excelled in marksmanship, he was given the role of sniper. This was considered a strictly selective post in the Finnish armed forces. Finnish snipers were elite in the world. Simo Häyha was the best, even though he was small in stature.
