Folding Knives Leatherman

The founder of Leatherman tool Group Inc. is Tim Leatherman, a native of Oregon, USA. When Tim and his wife went on a road trip to Europe in the 1970s, he had constantly to fix something. He had nothing better on hand than a pocketknife. It was during the frequent repairs of the obsolete Fiat that the idea of a multifunctional pliers, the so-called multi-tool, was to be born in Tim's head.

After returning to Oregon, he and his friend founded Leatherman and began production. This high-quality tool manufacturer is based in Oregon till now and employs only locals. Each product excels in perfect workmanship and has a 25-year warranty. In the offer from the Leatherman company, you can find not only multifunctional pliers, but also multifunctional folding knives, scissors or, for example, original multifunctional bracelets.

Not sure how to choose a knife? There are several parameters by that to choose a knife.

EDGE OF BLADE

For universal use, a blade with a smooth edge is the most suitable, with that you can cut practically everything, as with a serrated one. The serrated edge is ideal for cutting ropes or leather, but on the contrary, it is not possible to chop wood or work wood properly with it. The golden mean is the combined edge combining smooth and serrated ones, but even this variant has its disadvantage - grinding. It is very difficult to sharpen the combined edge at home.

BLADE MATERIAL

The blade is the most important thing on the knife, it is made of either carbon or stainless steel.

Carbon steels contain more carbon, what is also reflected in their properties - they have better cutting properties, are easy to process and also grind, for example, by grinders from one of the most famous grinding manufacturers on the market, Lansky sharpeners, whose products can also be found in our offer. The disadvantage of carbon steels is their greater susceptibility to corrosion, so they require careful maintenance. Although stainless steels are not entirely stainless, as the name suggests, they require less corrosion maintenance than carbon steels.

BLADE SHAPE

In our offer, you most often encounter the shapes:

  • drop point - the blade has a curved edge and a back with a convex curvature descending towards the tip of the blade
  • clip point - the back is cut off towards the tip of the blade and the tip of the knife is much closer to the center of the blade, so the user has more control over the knife when stabbing
  • tanto - the shape of the blade is inspired by the Japanese dagger tantó worn by samurai as a backup weapon, together with a short wakizashi sword. The blade is inclined at different angles at the front, and the advantage of this blade is its large thickness along its entire length.
  • spear point - one of the best blades for stabbing, it is found usually on stabbing knives. The correct spearpoint blade has a central spine and is double-edged, as the spear head is.

FOLDING KNIVES FUSES

Fuses are on the closing knives to eliminate unintentional opening when carried in a pocket, but also to ensure the open position of the knife during work.

For knives from our offer, you usually come across fuses of the following types:

  • lockback / backlock - a fuse characterized by a spring-loaded shutter with a protrusion at the end that fits into a recess in the blade
  • linerlock - this fuse is characterized by a metal sheet in the knife handle; when the blade is opened, it is tensioned and clamped by the end of the blade inside the handle
  • framelock - similar to the liner-lock safety device, the blade secures a tensioned metal blade, that is not inserted inside but is part of the handle, so the blade is secured by its own design - this safety device is slightly safer than linerlock

HANDLE MATERIAL

Handles are mostly ergonomically shaped and rubberized to fit well in the hand and prevent the hand from slipping on the blade and subsequent injury. In the range of folding knives, you can also come across knives with handles made of kraton, that is durable and has a low weight, or also made of steel, that is even more durable but heavier.
